What is Cordyceps Sinensis?

Cordyceps Sinensis (Cordyceps) has been used over thousand years in China and Tibet. Cordyceps is well known for having the efficacy of nourishing kidneys, lungs, protecting internal organs, and promotes vitality and endurance.  Cordyceps is an insect parasitizing fungus of the ascomycetes family.  The fungus lives in the larvae of one particular species of moth, the Hepialus armoricanus. The mycelium invades the caterpillar and eventually replaces the host tissue in winter, and a fungal fruit body grows out of the top of the caterpillar in the summer.  Hence, its Chinese name “Dong Chong Xia Cao” (冬蟲夏草)- “winter worm, summer grass”.

Therapeutic Uses

Cordyceps has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for millennia and was used specifically as a cure for impotence, to treat back pain, and as a tonic for kidney and liver health. Cordyceps was introduced to the North American in the early 1900′s and currently is used and studied as an herbal medicine for many conditions including chronic nephritis, sexual dysfunction, arrhythmia, gastric spasm, tinnitis, gastric atony, consumptive cough, excessive sweating and autoimmune diseases. 

In clinical studies, Cordyceps has been shown to have positive effects on hepatic and Kidney diseases, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and various aging disorders including sexual dysfunction and loss of vitality.  One particular study among men with sexual dysfunction showed a significant improvement. Cordyceps is also known as an anti-asthmatic and anti-cancer agent, used to stimulate the endocrine system, as an antibacterial agent, and to aid patients suffering from chronic renal failure.

No drug interactions and side effects of Cordyceps have been reported, however, people taking anticoagulant medications such as warfarin (Coumadin) should use caution, as Cordyceps has anti-clotting activity. Also, because of Cordyceps use as an immune suppressing agent, anybody taking corticosteroids should consult their physician and discuss possible additive effects and closely monitor dosage.
